We are happy and proud to announce that the German Biocyclic Vegan Association (Förderkreis Biozyklisch-Veganer Anbau e. V.) has been awarded a new three-year advisory project to support farmers in phasing out livestock farming and switching to the production of alternative proteins for human consumption: ProRegio.
This project is part of the Chancenprogramm Höfe (Farms Opportunity Programme), through which the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) provides targeted support to farmers transitioning from livestock farming to the production and processing of innovative protein-rich and climate-friendly foods. The aim of the funding is to disseminate knowledge about the cultivation, storage, and processing of non-leguminous protein crops, as well as algae and fungi, to develop innovative and sustainable foods and their components for protein supply in human nutrition. Biocyclic-vegan farming is also part of this intended transformation.
Our project, titled “Regional Future Farms – Closing Knowledge Gaps for the Protein Transition”, was submitted in November and approved at the end of last year. It includes six informational field days at best-practice farms in various regions of Germany, along with accompanying online events where biocyclic-vegan farming will also be presented as an alternative for cultivation and income. Additional consulting for interested farms and targeted public outreach will further disseminate academic knowledge and practical experience related to the cultivation, storage, and processing of non-leguminous protein crops such as algae, fungi, nuts, and pseudocereals.
We are excited about this new project phase, led by Kristin Höhlig, which will run from March 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027! We are particularly looking forward to a fruitful collaboration: the two associations, TransFARMation Deutschland e. V. and Faba Konzepte e. V., will contribute their expertise to support the project.
Recommendations for the Farms Opportunity Programme - a Concept Paper
Last year, together with Faba Konzepte e. V. and TransFARMation Deutschland e. V., we developed a recommendation paper for the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) on the Opportunity Programme for Famers:
Supporting livestock farms in their transition – but how?
